In this fun and interactive class we'll deconstruct the basics of skillful storytelling! Some people think writing is all about passion and following your intuition. In reality writing is a building process. You need characters, plot, and setting, as well as a theme (what’s-it-all-about) that supports your content. While this class uses the short scriptwriting format to illustrate its lessons, the basic Storytelling lessons you’ll learn can help beginning writers in all formats – from short stories to playwriting to game creation to scriptwriting.
Even if you don’t want to write film scripts, learning about scriptwriting teaches you a lot about how to structure clear character and story arcs, which will help you tackle even the complex demands of shaping a novel. In a properly formatted script each page = approximately 1 minute of film time. Because budget and story time are real concerns when shaping a story for a film, it pushes you to get to the heart of the story and to clearly define and motivate your characters and their actions !
